Colorado Cattle Drive
Take Part in a Western Tradition with a Cattle Drive in Colorado!
Get real with a cattle drive where YOU are actually doing the drive. Our guests take part in and actually help move the cattle herd on horseback with us, not watching us. We will coach you on working around the cattle safely and how to get them moved successfully.
This activity is not recommended for guests who have never ridden horses before. It is four hours of riding in the saddle with no breaks until the job is done. This activity therefore requires somewhat more physical fitness than our trail rides and can be quite fatiguing if you are not prepared to ride that long in the outdoors (sun, heat, dust, rain, wind, etc.).
You will see panoramic views of the Continental Divide and the Gore, Williams Fork and Never Summer mountain ranges. Riding terrain varies from open sagebrush plains to aspen and pine-covered hills.
The minimum age for this activity is 12. We do not take unaccompanied minors under 15 years old on this activity. Helmets are required for all 12 year olds and provided free of charge at check-in.

Colorado Cattle Drive FAQs
Is there a maximum rider weight for joining the cattle drive?
Guests must meet specific safety requirements to participate in our cattle drive experiences. Our strongest horses can safely carry up to 230 lbs, though not every horse is suited for this weight, and all riders must maintain a Body Mass Index (BMI) below 34 to ensure proper balance and stability. Because BMI affects a rider’s center of gravity, someone under 230 lbs may still be unable to ride if their height-to-weight ratio makes it difficult to remain secure in the saddle, especially on our rugged mountain terrain. Horseback riding is a physically demanding activity, and multiple factors influence whether a rider can participate safely. For these reasons, Rusty Spurr Ranch reserves the right to decline service if management determines a guest cannot be safely accommodated.
Can we bring our own horses?
We’re often asked if guests can bring their own horses, and while we appreciate the enthusiasm, all riders must use Rusty Spurr Ranch horses for our trail rides and cattle drives. Our horses are specially trained for the terrain, the cattle work, and the specific riding style we use here on the ranch, which ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Bringing outside horses creates safety, liability, and compatibility challenges, so we’re unable to accommodate them on any of our rides. Our trusted herd knows the land, the job, and the pace—so you can relax and enjoy the adventure.
Are there restrooms on the cattle drive?
Because our cattle drives take place on open rangeland, there are no traditional restroom facilities out on the ride. We do, however, have restrooms available at the ranch before you head out and again when you return. Once on the trail, nature becomes your only option, so we recommend planning ahead and taking care of any needs prior to mounting up.
Can we bring a camera?
Yes, you’re welcome to bring a camera on the cattle drive, and many guests love capturing the scenery and the experience. However, because you’ll be riding in rugged terrain and actively working with the cattle, we recommend using a small, secure camera or keeping your phone in a pocket or pouch that zips or snaps shut. Safety always comes first, so please make sure any photography is done when your horse is standing still and you have both hands free. This helps ensure a safe ride for you, your horse, and the rest of the group.
Do you provide transportation to and from the ranch for guests staying in nearby accommodations?
