Colorado Engagement Proposals on Horseback

Imagine sharing an unforgettable moment with the one you love as you ride side-by-side through towering aspens, open mountain meadows, and sweeping high-country vistas.

If you’re looking for a memorable and unique way to propose, an engagement ride on horseback with Colorado’s stunning mountain scenery is the perfect choice. Your experience includes pre-planning with our staff, a private two-hour trail ride for two, and an experienced guide who has assisted with many successful proposals.

Your guide will match you with the right horses and capture photos or video of the big moment using your phone or camera. After the proposal, you’ll enjoy the rest of your private ride through peaceful aspens and scenic overlooks. Feel free to bring champagne and celebrate back at the cabin once you return!

Because each proposal is customized, this experience cannot be booked online—please call us to plan the details. Any additional requests are subject to an increase in price.

Engagement Proposals Horseback Ride FAQ

What is the required weight limit for participating in our rides?

The maximum weight our strongest horses can safely carry is 230 lbs, though not every horse is built for that amount, and all riders must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) under 34 to ensure both horse and rider safety. Please note that riders under 230 lbs may still be unable to ride if their height-to-weight ratio creates balance or stability concerns. Because a higher BMI raises a rider’s center of gravity, it can make it harder to stay secure in the saddle—especially on our mountainous terrain. Horseback riding is a physical activity, and many factors influence safe participation, so we reserve the right to decline service if management determines a rider cannot be safely accommodated.

Where are you located?

Rusty Spurr Ranch is located just over an hour from Breckenridge, Winter Park, and Steamboat Springs, nestled in one of the most beautiful high-country areas in Colorado. From Denver, the drive typically takes 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic and mountain conditions, and travel times can increase on weekends, holidays, or when I-70 experiences delays. The ranch sits 4 miles south of Kremmling, CO on Highway 9—simply turn east onto County Road 387 and follow the scenic gravel road for 4.5 miles to reach us. The road is winding and shared with free-range cattle, so please take your time and enjoy the gentle approach. You’ll receive easy step-by-step directions in your confirmation email, and they are also available on our website. When you arrive, please park thoughtfully so we can make the most of our small parking area—just like city parking, every inch helps, and the reward is free parking in one of Colorado’s most stunning settings.

Are helmets required?

For your safety, please note that while Colorado does not require helmet use, our insurance does require all riders ages 8–12 to wear one. We offer complimentary helmets at check-in, and although supply can be limited, riders in this age group will always receive priority.

Do you offer private or customized riding experiences?

We offer private 2- and 3-hour trail rides that can be customized to match the scenery and experience you’re hoping for. Please keep in mind that, no matter which ride you choose or what your riding ability is, our horses walk only—both for safety and because they navigate steep mountain terrain and dense forest areas. If you have a special idea in mind for your engagement ride, we’re happy to talk through the possibilities and help you create the perfect experience.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs are not allowed on the ranch. We love them, but for their safety and the safety of our horses and ranch dogs, we cannot permit visiting pets on the property. We also do not have shaded parking, so leaving a dog in a vehicle is not an option—especially during warm weather. In addition, unfamiliar dogs can disrupt the peaceful experience for other guests. If you’re traveling with a pet, we recommend arranging care in advance; Dog Chalet in Dillon (970-262-9076) is a great local option for doggie daycare.
