Private Horseback Rides in Colorado
Imagine having the entire trail to yourselves—just you, your group, and a dedicated wrangler guiding you through Colorado’s most stunning high-country scenery.
With a private ride at Rusty Spurr Ranch, you can wander through peaceful aspen groves, climb to mountaintop viewpoints, and explore off-the-beaten-path areas rarely visited on our standard tours. It’s the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion, capture extra photos, or enjoy a more intimate and personalized horseback adventure.
Your private ride is tailored exclusively to your group, with hand-selected horses matched to each rider’s needs and experience level. As with all our rides, the pace remains a comfortable walk to safely navigate the rugged mountain terrain.
The minimum age for Colorado horseback riding is eight years old. For safety reasons, we do not offer double riding or pony rides. Children ages 8–12 are required to wear a helmet, which we provide free of charge at check-in.

Colorado Private Horseback Rides FAQ
What is the weight limit to ride on a private ride?
Are trotting or running allowed during the private ride?
No—our private rides are conducted at a walking pace for the safety of both riders and horses. The rugged mountain terrain, the physical demands on our horses, and varying rider experience levels make walking the safest and most enjoyable option. That said, our rides are not strict nose-to-tail experiences. We encourage guests to spread out and explore off-trail wherever the terrain allows, giving you the freedom to enjoy a more personalized and authentic Colorado horseback adventure.
Where will we ride during a private horseback experience?
Our private rides take you through some of the most stunning scenery Colorado has to offer. Starting at about 8,000 feet in elevation, your route winds through wildflower meadows, peaceful aspen groves, and open mountain terrain across our high-country ranch. Because it’s a true mountain ride, you’ll experience gentle climbs and descents, but there are no cliffs or steep drop-offs, and our horses are sure-footed and experienced on this terrain. Along the way, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the Continental Divide, the Gore Range, and—if you’re lucky—perhaps even spot some local wildlife (the real kind, not the relatives you brought with you).
How should we dress for our private horseback ride?
For your private horseback ride, comfort and safety matter far more than fashion—you will get dusty, and horseback riding has a way of proving that low-rise jeans and tight denim aren’t the best choices. High heels sink into the dirt, tight pants can rip, and shoes without proper heel support can slip right out of the stirrups. We recommend long pants and closed-toe, closed-heel shoes such as sneakers or cowboy boots. No spurs, even if you feel like channeling Wyatt Earp. Hats should be secure enough for a windy Colorado afternoon, and sports bras are a great idea. Skip the shorts unless you’re hoping for chafing or scratches from branches along the trail. Please avoid high heels, heavy-tread hiking boots, clogs, flip-flops, or any footwear without heel protection. Bring a light jacket or an extra layer in case the mountain weather changes—we provide bright yellow raincoats on every saddle so you stay comfortable on your ride.
What is your cancellation policy for private horseback rides?
Because private horseback rides reserve a dedicated time slot and resources that cannot be rebooked last-minute, we maintain a strict cancellation policy. All riders must be mentally and physically able to participate, and refunds are not issued if a guest becomes frightened, is unable to mount or ride comfortably, or exceeds the stated weight limit at check-in. We also do not offer refunds or partial refunds for guests who choose not to complete their ride.
Cancellations made 48 hours or more before your scheduled ride are eligible for a 100% refund. Cancellations made within 48 hours of the ride are non-refundable, regardless of the reason. This includes travel delays, illness, changes in plans, weather concerns, traffic, late nights, lack of sleep, family tensions, or any other circumstance within that 48-hour window. We appreciate a good story—and may even share the best one each year—but our staff and horses still need to be compensated and cared for.
For groups of 9 or more, a 50% non-refundable deposit is charged at booking due to the number of horses and staff required. The remaining 50% becomes non-refundable within two weeks of the activity date.
